About the Event
From Seoul to Spokane, Arthur Arnold has spent the past 20 years conducting symphony orchestras all over the world. Amidst the recent volatility of wars and pandemics, he has found comfort in reconnecting with his roots as a cellist.
Join us for an intimate evening of cello and piano, performed in collaboration with Dr. Moira Hopfe-Ostensen. You will also hear stories from Arthur’s decade-long tenure as music director of the Moscow Symphony Orchestra and learn more about his passion project, the PRISMA Festival & Academy.

About the Musicians
Arthur Arnold, Dutch-born conductor and cellist, is the co-founder and Artistic Director of the Pacific Region International Summer Music Association (PRISMA Festival & Academy) on Canada’s west coast. This annual festival brings together world-renowned guest artists and outstanding young musicians from leading international conservatories, attracting more than 5,000 audience members to its concerts and events each summer.
He began his professional career as a cellist in the Netherlands, studying with Carel van Leeuwen Boomkamp, Harro Ruijsenaars, Dmitri Ferschtman, and Christopher Bunting, forming a foundation in both the Dutch and British cello traditions. From the age of sixteen, he studied conducting with Jos Vermunt, Anton Kersjes, and Hans Vonk.
Before his conducting career took flight, Arnold performed with the Dutch Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, appearing regularly at Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw and in major productions with the Netherlands Opera.
An active chamber musician, he toured internationally as a member of Conjunto Ibérico and collaborated with distinguished ensembles, including a performance of Schubert’s String Quintet in C Major with the Lafayette String Quartet.
From January 2012 until his resignation in March 2022, Arnold served as Music Director of the Moscow Symphony Orchestra. He stepped down in protest of the war in Ukraine, taking a principled public stand.
Since 2016, Arnold has led a pioneering musical collaboration with the Tla’amin Nation. In partnership with the Tla’amin Singers and Drummers, the PRISMA Festival Orchestra performs traditional Tla’amin songs each year, featuring the Nation’s artists as soloists with symphony orchestra – an ongoing and meaningful cultural collaboration.

Dr. Moira Hopfe-Ostensen, pianist, educator, and collaborative artist, is recognized for her expressive artistry and deep commitment to music education. She holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Piano Performance and Literature from the University of Alberta and earned advanced diplomas from the Royal College of Music (Associate, Piano Pedagogy) and the Royal Academy of Music (Licentiate, Piano Performance) in London, England. She completed the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Piano Performance and Pedagogy at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas.
Dr. Hopfe-Ostensen most recently served as Chair of the Keyboard Department at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, where she taught piano performance and pedagogy at the undergraduate and graduate levels. She also served as Director of the Southwestern Music Academy and Assistant Director of the Southwestern Centre for the Arts.
An active solo and collaborative performer, she has appeared throughout Canada, the United States, and Europe. Deeply committed to pedagogical excellence, she is certified as an Advanced Specialist by the Royal Conservatory of Music and serves as a member of its College of Examiners in both Canada and the United States.
Dr. Hopfe-Ostensen currently serves as Artist in Residence at the qathet Academy of Music & Arts in British Columbia, where she contributes to performance, teaching, and community music engagement.
